Recently, some of our customers were targeted by a type of malware, called Ransomware. Luckily they are using vBoxxCloud, and all the files were backed up and in the Cloud. Today, we talk about Ransomware and what can you do to reduce the risk of an attack.

What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malware that secretly installs on your computer. In the process, it locks all the files and demands a ransom payment to restore them and its simplest form locks the system demanding payment to unlock it. More advanced versions encrypt the files, which makes them inaccessible.

News reports indicate that ransomware criminals are getting better. According to GCN, a medical center and the House of Representatives were victims of several ransomware attacks in 2016. While authorities are making an effort to prevent these attacks, there are a couple of steps you can take to protect yourself.

How to prevent Ransomware?

The best way to recover from a ransomware attack is to avoid becoming a victim. You can take a couple of steps that will help prevent or minimize these attacks:

  • Backup your data: vBoxxCloud synchronizes your data to the cloud, if the files are deleted or in this case inaccessible you can always restore them.
  • Inform customers/employees: Another way for users to prevent ransomware issues is being extra careful with phishing emails. These emails usually have a peculiar address, a message or an attachment that gives it away. It’s very important for users to be particularly aware of this.
  • Antivirus: A good antivirus will detect older versions of Cryptolocker and other forms of ransomware.

 How does vBoxxCloud help?

Malicious software usually affects the local machine. Cryptolocker, encrypts the files locally. If you have your files backed up in vBoxxCloud, you could recover these files. vBoxxCloud can keep deleted files for a specific amount of time. Deleting the locked files and recovering them would solve the issue in case you fall victim to Ransomware.
