How to protect your business from cyberattacks? – Part II

When focusing on cybersecurity, physical security is often overlooked. It’s important to keep it in mind, after all you do not want a disgruntled employee to impact your efforts, by walking out with equipment or data from the company.

Physical Security

Here’s how to improve physical security in the office:

  • Onsite servers should be isolated and only accessed by appropriate staff.
  • Mobile devices should be stored in locked areas when they are on premises.
  • Install applications on mobile devices that let you remote delete information on the device. Cloud services such as vBoxxCloud allow you to delete content remotely.

Software Security

Naturally safeguarding your network requires an investment in security technology to protect your company. Once you know your security needs, you can acquire security solutions that fit your business and budget.

Firewalls and Anti-Virus Protection

These are two essential items in your security strategy. Firewalls monitor and control incoming and outgoing traffic, blocking any untrusted traffic. Anti-virus software can detect and remove a wide range of threats that can enter your network.

Even if you are using both of these tools, some attacks can still bypass their protection. You could go a level higher and implement an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) that works together with the firewall and anti-virus software.

An IPS, takes advantage of a database of attack signatures in order to identify and block known types of attacks. It can also prevent employees from accidentally downloading malicious content.

The combination of firewall, anti-virus software and IPS protection, provide an essential and affordable protection for any business network.

Backups

Protecting your business means protecting your data from unauthorized access and natural incidents. Whether it’s a power failure or a natural disaster it’s important to keep your data safe.

Physically separating the data from your network would prevent any data loss in case of an attack or other type of incident. Use a backup tool to back up data locally or to the cloud.

You should backup every week, and make an incremental backup each night if you work with very sensitive data. Make sure you evaluate properly the recovery requirements, as it depends of your goals. Do you need to recover the most recent copy of the data, or do you need to recover data from past transactions?

Secure Wi-Fi Connection

A simple, yet, effective measure. The use of mobile devices in the office has made Wi-Fi networks a necessity. Hackers are aware of this, and know that smaller businesses tend not properly secure their networks.

Unsecured wireless networks give hackers easy access to your network. Make sure you change the router’s default name and password, use a firewall to control the Wi-Fi traffic and create a separate Wi-Fi network for guests, not connected to the internal network.
