Are you familiar with the different layers of Cloud Computing?
Cloud Computing is a service that has become more common among consumers and companies. Cloud Computing means storing as well as accessing data and programs through the Internet, instead of on your computer’s hard drive. By means of this blog we want to elaborate more on the various layers of the Cloud.
The Cloud is composed up of different layers, the collective term for this is XaaS. It stands for a number of things including ‘X as a service’. The most common examples of XaaS are Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).
De first layer of the Cloud is IaaS, with this level the end- user has complete freedom to design and manage the accompanying hardware. To achieve this, it is essential to have the right knowledge and experience. A hosting party offers the infrastructure of IaaS to the user.
The second layer is called PaaS. The provider offers a number of services on top of the IaaS infrastructure. In the PaaS layer the hardware and infrastructure is managed by the hosting party, but the end user has the authority to develop the software with regard to his own standards.
SaaS is the last layer and is the most common form of the Cloud. SaaS is seen as an application layer of Cloud Computing. Whereas the platform PaaS and the infrastructure of IaaS serve as basic layers, SaaS is a completely developed service where the end user is not required to buy or maintain the software. However the end user enters into a contract with the hosting party, usually paying a fee per month and per user. This SaaS infrastructure provider takes care of the installation, maintenance, managing and back-up. The software and hardware are not installed on the customer’s devices, but rather in a data centre belonging to the SaaS hosting provider. The end user always has access to the software trough an Internet connection or private network and thereby gaining access to the files.
Benefits of the SaaS model include:
• Easier administration
• No maintenance
• Global accessibility
• All users have the same version of software
• Easier collaboration
