Understanding Cloud Computing: SaaS, PaaS, IaaS – Part I

Cloud Computing is a term that describes a wide range of services. Companies frequently use cloud services all over the world. However, different companies use the cloud in different ways. Consequently, the perceived value can also change, from company to company. Cloud providers can help the customer understand what benefits are an inherent part of the Cloud, and which of those benefits are most useful.

Defining Cloud Computing

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), cloud computing enables, on-demand network access to various computing resources (i.e. Networks, servers, applications, storage and services). One of its main advantages is the quick access and small interaction with the service provider. Cloud computing gives users fast access to resources.

The NIST mentions several aspects that help explain the expansion of cloud services in the last 4/5 years.

  • On-demand self-service
  • Broad network access
  • Resource pooling
  • Rapid pooling
  • Measured Service

Currently, cloud computing is structured in three areas.

Software as a Service (SaaS): applications designed for end-users, delivered over the web. vBoxxCloud for the most part could be categorized as SaaS.

Platform as a Service (PaaS): PaaS includes a set of tools and services created to make SaaS applications quickly and efficiently.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): IaaS as the name indicates is the hardware and software behind the cloud. This includes servers, storage, networks and operating systems.

The three areas add some structure to cloud computing. However, the differences between these categories have been difficult to point out. The lines are more blurred than ever, especially between PaaS and IaaS as they are often combined to offer a more attractive package to possible buyers.

Stay tuned for the next post where we will describe in more detail the advantages and disadvantages of these three areas.
